Puerto Rico has been faced with many important choices over the last few years: either to become a US state, have separate sovereignty, or operate as a commonwealth. Each option has its own advantages, I will discuss just a few in order to give a just overview about what the Puerto Ricans are facing everyday.
What does it mean if Puerto Rico were to become the 51st state in the United States? Statehood is defined as many different things to state a is the condition of being a state, the status of being one of the states of the United States state, a politically organized body of people usually occupying a definite territory, and lastly the quality or state of being self-governing (Puerto Rico Status Options, Para 3). If Puerto Rico would decide to become a part of the United States than they would be given the right to be fully self-governing with their rights secured under the United States Constitution (Puerto Rico Congressional Proposal, Para 4).
