This lesson is satisfying the ES.1.4 standard which describes Hubble’s Law, identifies the “Big Bang” theory as the most widely accepted theory explaining the formation and expansion of the universe. The objectives for this inquiry lesson are to convey and transmit the following knowledge: Students will be able to graphically illustrate the nature of expansion of the universe through the use of a balloon model. The students will be able to compare this model to Hubble’s Law and the “Big Bang” theory. Finally the students will be able to discuss and project the future of our universe with respect to the theorized expansion. The lesson will begin with an example of a very small scale explosion using a confetti pop-gun. We will inquire the class about any observations they can make about what just happened, listing them on the board.
