The compact disc has become an irrefutable part of society, integrated into the culture and everyday lives we all live and participate in day after day. ... Introduced to the world in 1983, the compact disc served as the product of, and paved the way for technological breakthroughs which would revolutionize the recording and reproduction of audio signals and digital data alike (Sony 1). While both programmers and consumers have presented various fronts of skepticism regarding the product, the compact disc has held true, selling over sixty-five million in the first two years of availability, and becoming the most rapidly-adopted consumer product ever to be created (Oppenheim 142). ... During this time, the evolution of the recording and reproduction of audio signals began with the invention of the phonograph by Thomas A. ... Shaped by the ultimate aim of recording and reproducing an audio signal faithfully, without introducing distortion of noise of any form, the two major corporations Philips and Sony became inspired and later unified, pursuing an agreement on an optical digital audio disc standard known as the compact disc (Sony 1). ... Because of their widespread availability and phenomenal success, compact discs ended up becoming the fastest growing consumer electronic device in history, selling over four million units in its first four years of production (Oppenheim 15).
The compact disc represents an exciting breakthrough in information storage capacity. ... According to the “Redbook,” the standardized digital format of the disc, and consequently its success, results from an intricate process of encoding the information prior to being stored and ultimately reading it off the disc as a bit stream at rates in excess of four megabits per second. Such a compact disc is made with the incorporation of three unique steps: pre-mastering, mastering, and replication. ... First, a waveform carrying the encoded information is transferred from magnetic tape to a modulator, described as emulating a fast shutter. This modulator controls a powerful short-wavelength laser beam as it passes through a lens, forming a spot on the photo-resist coating of a glass master disc. As the disc spins, a lens moves radially, following the information laid out in the spiral characteristic of CD-ROMs. ... The surface profile is presented on to one or more physical negatives, preparing the disc for the last step in the CD-making process. In the final replication stage is the creation of a number of sub-masters from the master CD and the production of large volumes of replicate discs from these sub-masters, discs marketable and ready to be purchased and played (Oppenheim 15).
The result of the CD making process is a compact disc composed of a run-in section, a music section, and a run-out section. The run-in section includes a table of contents, details of the number of recorded tracks, and the time from the start of the disc to each track.
