In order to define my personal role in maintaining and furthering freedom, it is first necessary to create a plausible definition for this elusive, enigmatic, and often paradoxical concept. First, freedom exists only within the sphere of the mind; it is an awareness, not a right. Second, it is the result of a combination of ideas and actions that occur simultaneously in an environment of social, religious, and economic corruption and upheaval. Third, once freedom has been established as the foundation of a society, the loss of this freedom would return the citizens of that society to the turmoil that drove them to create liberty in the first place. Thus, freedom can be defined as an essential, abstract idea that is the consequence of man’s refusal to be denied his inherent personal freedoms. In order to further freedom, it is essential to realize that freedom is not merely an American invention. It is the result of thousands of years of human struggle. Thus, it is important to analyze the condition of freedom on a worldwide scale, and to recognize that, as Americans, we are fortunate to have emerged from a history of turbulence grasping freedom with both hands.
