Overview
The study of substance abuse has been discussed quite frequently throughout the years, mainly on the internet. Although there are very few books written about substance abuse the ones that I did find were extremely helpful. These studies cover many things; the substances being used, the effects of substance abuse, why there is substance abuse, and how substance abuse contributes to accidents. One of the actions on substance abuse was done by a group named the Center on Addiction and Substance at Columbia University (CASA). ... Substance abuse or misuse is the frequent abuse of any mind altering substance which severely interferes with an individuals physical and mental health, social situation and responsibilities. Alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in college students, but the misuse of any drug, including heroin, cocaine, crack and marijuana, comes into this category, as well as the misuse of unstable material such as glue. Substance abuse may also include smoking cigarettes or drinking excessive amounts of coffee. Although not strictly a type of substance abuse, the eating disorder bulimia involves the misuse of food. Most forms of substance abuse give you a short-term feeling of well being or feel as if you have control but all of these can eventually harm your health. The most severe forms of substance abuse are normally treated by professional drug and alcohol rehabilitation services.
