Television is often described in liquid terms: as a torrent of images washing over you, inundating you, saturating your brain. Yet the medium isn't truly fluid; images don't morph into each other like figures in a Dali painting; rather, millions of "particles" (stills) flicker by in rapid succession, the majority of which register unconsciously, if at all. Home video technology allows one to view this multitude selectively. A recent review of a DVD release of High Noon touts it as a delectable collection of images, and encourages the viewer to click through them one frame at a time (which sounds pretty nerdy, but never mind).
