Garrison Keillor s Prodigal Son A Comedic Rendition of The Parable of the Prodigal Son

“The Parable of the Prodigal Son” was a story written about a man, who has two sons. ... His father is pleased that he is home, robes him, and kills the fatted calf to eat (Parable 232-233). Garrison Keillor wrote a comedic play about this story. The comedy adds more interest and more conversation than the parable did. Keillor, born 1942 in Minnesota, became the host of Minnesota Public Radio. “Prodigal Son is an example of Keillor’s radio drama, which tells its story entirely through voices and sound effects” (Keillor 1361). Keillors style of this parable was in no way disrespectful of the original parable; he just explored it in a different way.
The story starts out with Dwight sitting at the table reading the newspaper; he tells his dad about the stocks for fatted calf, knowing that the parable was set in the past in Jerusalem where they don’t have a Damascus market.
