The purpose of this experiment was to measure and observe the effect of a magnetic field on various solutions. ... The Gouy balance consisted of a long tube (which contained the sample that was being considered at the time) where part of it was in the field while the other part was outside of the field where the applied magnetic field was equal to zero. The induced magnetic moment corresponds to the change in weight of the solution when an external magnetic field is added. If the induced magnetic field is in the same direction then it will have a positive value. If the induced magnetic field is in the opposite direction then it will have a negative value.
