The Price of Education
It seems that education has become a hot topic in our country today. ... every child has a right to this type of education. ... Nowhere else on earth has it been drummed into the public psyche as much as it has been here, education is a right of every American. ... We have become a nation that puts education right along side the fundamental rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. ... The education that American children are so lucky to be offered is among the finest in the world. ...
From the start of the book education is a central theme. Miriams story, as told to her brother Mark, begins with an introduction that sets up education as well as freedom from oppressive South Africa as driving forces in young Miriams life. ... Her brother Mark was obviously a role model and did encourage all of his siblings to use education as a means of escape from the life they knew. ... Still she knew that education was the most valuable gift she could give to her children. It was Miriams mother who repeatedly told her that "education is the key" to freedom in life (112). ... Throughout the book, Miriams mother continually reminds her daughter to focus on education when there seems little else in life. I was particularly stuck by her mothers love of education when I read of when Miriam would try to teach her mother to read. ...
Education also enabled Miriam to get through a childhood that most adults could not endure. From daily berating by teachers for her appearance in school to feared necklacing by Comrades during intense civil unrest, education remained the constant in her life.
