Chapter 6 – How Cells Divide
Background
- recall from cell theory that all cells arise from preexisting cells
- cells must duplicate themselves
- in prokaryotes, this duplication is done via binary fission
- DNA (circular pieces) replicates, cell expands and divides
- in eukaryotes, we see two types of cell divisions
- division to make duplicate cells (growth and replacement) = mitosis
- division to make gametes (sex cells – sperm and egg) = meiosis
- need to consider how DNA is functioning as chromosomes
Chromosomes
- DNA in eukaryotes is found in multiple pieces called chromosomes; recall
that DNA is composed of two chains of nucleotides
- each chromosome codes for various traits such as eye color, hair color,
height, etc.
