Oleanna Oleanna, by David Memet, is a play that is based on an issue that is common in today’s society. The play tells the story of a professor and a students and the unfortunate challenge of the teacher student relationship. This story shows the events that cause a change in each character and what miscommunication can do to a relationship if the two characters involved are unable to clearly tell each other what is meant. Through out the play David Memet creates conversations that can be meant in more than one way. By doing this Memet was able to create the conflict and develop his plot. John and Carol, the main character in the play, began with a student – teacher relationship and turned into a relationship full of conversations that were full of comments that were taken in an unfortunate manner. While I was reading the play there were many different thoughts that went though my head about each character. When Memet introduces each of the characters he creates each character so that the audience’s initial opinion of each character will change as the play progresses. When John and Carol had their first meeting Memet made the conversation seem as though the two characters had many different feeling in common. By creating this friendly relationship between the two character Memet was able to give a little bit of history of each character, however that history that he create would not lead to a foreshadow of events that was about to take place. As the play continues the audience begins to see a change in each character that was unexpected and not predictable. John calls Carol to his office in the second act, which his the turning point of each character and the audience learns that after the first meeting Carol pressed sexual harassment charges against John.
