Diego Velázquez was born in Seville, Spain in the year 1599. At the age of ten he began an apprenticeship with Francisco Herrera the elder. Velázquez said that he was too much of a strict man and decided to turn to Francisco Pacheco. He signed an apprentice contract in 1610, which would last from four to six years. After many years of hard work, in 1617, Velázquez passed his examination that enabled him the practice of painting. In 1618, he married Juan Pacheco, the daughter of his teacher. In 1612, Velázquez traveled to Madrid to see the great of Escorial and its masterpieces.
