What prescription drug has risen six fold since 1990? Many people have noticed the increase in the prescription of this drug, but don’t find it serious enough to check into deeper. Ciba-Geigy is a prescription drug company that profited from this “over prescription” with profits doubling. Barry Glassner writes, “Ciba-Giegy was hardly the first company to cash in on adults’ eagerness for medical solutions to child-rearing problems,” (Glassner 78). Richard Bromfield, who is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, and has written many articles on the prescribing of certain drugs, wrote, “Ritalin is prescribed to nearly six percent of all school-aged boys for symptoms of ADHD, which include a short attention span, hyperactivity and compulsive behavior,” (Bromfield). Ritalin is prescribed to many kids as a quick fix to their problems. Ritalin is being prescribed to many children who have the “symptoms” of ADHD, but in fact have a more serious problem, which Ritalin will just cover up. Ritalin was first marketed in 1957 by the Ciba Pharmaceutical Company. It is used in the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy. “The drug does help some people pay attention and function better,” wrote Richard Bromfield, “But too many children, and more and more adults, are being given Ritalin inappropriately,” (Bromfield).
