The Republic of Iraq a small country that is only 438,317 sq km (Encarta “Iraq“), located in the middle east. Iraq has been ruled by a brutal dictator named Saddam Hussein since 1979. During Saddam’s rule over Iraq until 2003, he has lead them into many volatile situations. When he first took power he started his brutal dictatorship with breaking his own agreement that was set up in 1975 stating a settlement and peace with Iran if they would stop supporting the Kurds in Iraq who did not support the Iraqi government. Saddam wanted to end the war in 1982 when he realized he would not succeed in winning. To his dismay the war with Iran did not end until 1988 and put Iraq in some major financial trouble of an approximately 75 billion dollars and caused hundreds of thousands of casualties. After the Iran war, Saddam did not waste any time to use his army again and sent troops into Kuwait and annexed it. Due to Saddam sending troops into Kuwait the United States sent troops of there own in to stop Iraq, this was known as the Persian Gulf War. Even though this war was much shorter the devastation and debt was equal to the war with Iran. As a result to both of these wars the people of Iraq, especially the majority Shia Muslims in the south and the Kurds in the north started an uprising which was quickly shut down by Saddam’s special police force. The Kurdish in the north were gassed by Saddam and nearly eliminated until the international community stepped in and stopped him. Saddam’s own friends and family were split in there feeling about his rule after the war too. Those who supported Saddam were treated as friends and the others who he felt might threaten his reign were jailed, murdered, or exiled.
