Flea John Donne

... He is trying to show us how an insignificant thing like the flea could be significant enough, when closely thought about. The flea, a “bloodsucker”, is the central subject of the discussion in which the poet seems to be trying to convince that person about the importance of the essence of the life of this “insignificant” being.
In the first stanza, he says “mark but this flea”, with mark in this case meaning a symbol of disgrace or infamy. He is saying that the flea is not a “dirty” or disgraceful thing. He is showing the listener that the flea has an intrinsic value and thus should be valued. He adds by saying that flea is very important because it is a symbol of purity for the people whose blood it has sucked. According to Donne, the flea has sucked the blood of the two people being talked about in the poem and through this blood in the flea; the people are linked to each other.
