“The Story of an Hour” (12), written by Kate Chopin in 1894, is a short story that identifies the struggles of married women in the late 1890’s. ...
Chopin’s story takes place in the late 1800’s, when women didn’t have the liberties that they now possess. Women were expected to maintain the household. ... Society did not approve of “freedom” for women. ... She did not choose her life, but she embraced it as if she had chosen it in order to be accepted in other people’s eyes.
“The Story of an Hour” takes place within this historical background. Chopin describes the epiphany a woman, Ms Mallard, experienced once she learns about the death of her husband. ... “There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature. ... Ms Mallard was going to be able, for the first time in her life, to choose her path without society’s criticism. ... Even though the historical context influenced greatly the evolution of the story, the author’s personal experienced was also reflected in the story.
Kate Chopin was born in 1850. ... The lack of paternal figure in her household made her see how women could be authority figures, and this was evidently a strong influence in her work. ... This discovery at such early age can be easily related to Ms Mallard’s epiphany in “The Story of an Hour”.
