HAIL
Hailstorms often hit swiftly, take place in a small area, and last only a few minutes, bring about intense winds and rain. Although meteorologists have become skilled at foreseeing their occurrence and position, hail constantly takes individuals off guard. ... Although hail is more prevalent in Hail Alley, hailstorms may occur anywhere in United States.
Hail is formed in the area of a cumulonimbus cloud where the updraft air mass meets the down draft air mass. Moisture particles begin to freeze and form hail when the temperature is 32F or below. Hailstones transform beginning with the smallest particles of ice called graupel through stages that are called hail and hailstones. These ice particles, all of which we commonly refer to as hail, can fall at any of the stages. Technically, forecasters call the ice particles hail after they reach the size of 1/5 of an inch.
Hailstorms can occur anywhere in the United States, However, hail is more prevalent in the High Plains east of the Rocky Mountains in an area of the United States known as Hail Alley.
