Valentine’s Day is a day when people around the world declare their love for others. The day, when florists worldwide will have their revenue double and tripled, thanks to the small tokens of love and affection, costing onwards of fifty dollars each. But don’t worry love has not always been this commercial. In the late sixteenth century, a young poet by the name of John Donne emerged, with his first book of poetry. Satires, which is now known as his best, was giving two big thumbs down by the literary world. What I believe to be his best work is a poem called Song. This poem was believed to be written around the time that his was womanising, and attempting to sleep with the majority of London’s female population. Here is an exert from Song, which can be found on page three of your booklet. Though she were true when you met her, And last till you write your letter Yet she Will be False, ere I come, to two or three. This poem “beats around the bush”, so to speak, about the topic of love. In the Elizabethan period, in which this poem was written, women did not know of their husband to be until their engagement was official. These pre-arranged marriages were the “norm” then, which seems so belittling to the female gender. The man must be the strong one - go hunt, bring food, protect the women.
