When Harry Met Sally

We all want to be in a fairytale. As we open our eyes to the reality of exhistance we begin to long for a better place; a different turn of fate that would bring us to the place where we belong. The place we’re in just doesn’t seem right. Eventually most people just except the fact that this is what we’ve been given, and they move on. But who doesn’t feel absolutely frozen by the unforgettable effigy left by a fairytale? As children we hear of better worlds where passion has no limits, the hearts of all people find peace, and the prince always lives happily ever after with his princess. In fact, many times dreams of these possibilities engrain themselves on our hearts so vivdly that we begin to seek fairytale relationships with those we encounter in reality. The unavoidable bonds that form as a result of interpersonal communication can commonly be the result of one or both parties trying to find that missing peice of the puzzle that would make their whole lives complete. These relationships unfold in a variety of different ways. Sometimes as the fog of romance lifts people discover that they’re not willing to accept the imperfections that become prevalent in each other, and so they terminate the relationship. Sometimes people become so comfortable with the initial mutual acceptance that they exchange, that they never wish to risk a deeper level of disclosure. No matter what the approach is though, the most favorable long-term relationships are the result of both parties realizing that another person will never make them whole. They see however that they can come together to help complete a part of the bigger picture. In less abstract terms: these people see that by fostering good relationships they have someone to walk with that will help them get through this life, not walk it for them. There are defined stages that people must go through in order to reach that level of trust and closeness that life-long friends of this nature possess. These steps progress from one to another while portraying very recognizable charactoristics. As the result of years of in-depth studies, we now can map out the stages of relationship development and begin to make sense of what otherwise might seem like chaotic communications behaviors. The movie “When Harry Met Sally” was ideal for pointing out relationship stages. We all want to be in a fairytale.
