When John Martin joined Taco Bell in 1983 he knew that if his company was going to compete with its much larger, more established rivals, he would have to make significant changes. At the time that he became CEO of Taco Bell, the company was facing many challenges and didn’t really know where they stood in the Mexican food business. Taco Bell had be dealing with significant delays for customers, inconsistent taste and food quality, frequent fulfillment errors, and significant oversights and errors by managers just to name a few. The evolution (1983-1994) of Taco Bell can be divided into three phases during which John Martin implemented a lot of changes.
1983-1988: INCREMENTAL CHANGES
Between 1983 and 1988, Taco Bell took many actions to move from a regional Mexican restaurant to a fast food restaurant. ... CEO John Martin first changed Taco Bells physical units by remodeling the restaurants, increasing seating capacity, adding drive-through windows, installing new signs, and outfitting employees in more contemporary uniforms.
