Viticulture is concerned with the growing and production of grapes. This essay is concerned with the production of wines from these grapes. There are many different varieties of grapes and different strategies for growing them. biophysical, technological and economic factors all affect the growing and success of vines. Biophysical factors are the most important. Location is based on climate because the latter effects the types of grapes produced. A warm to hot climate will produce grapes with high sugar content that make fortified wines. Medium climate produces tabletop wines and cold climates produce juices and less alcoholic wines. Microclimates can exist in areas with mountains and other natural protections. Microclimates allow vineyards to have totally unique conditions from other vineyards in the area and thus produce different tasting wines. Temperature is also important. If the temperature is constantly hot and there is plenty of sunshine the grapes can become sunburnt. Here it is important that vintners have a management plan that allows for thick foliage at the top of the vine to provide protection. Weather is also a biophysical factor affecting production. If an area is prone to rain during harvest time then extra money must be spent to make sure the grapes are picked quickly so that they do not get mildew and destroy the harvest.
