Wal-Mart Takes on the World Wal-Mart is now the biggest corporation in the world, with sales in 2001 reaching a stunning $226 billion in revenue. Founded by Sam Walton in 1962, his high level of service, strong inventory, and purchasing management made Wal-Mart the most dominate corporation in the United States. “In 1999 Wal-Mart ranked ninth on the Financial Times Most Respected in the World list of companies” and in 2000, “the company was ranked fifth in Fortune magazine”. Gone are the mom-and-pop bakeries, shoe stores, and corner pharmacies. The all-in-one store has arrived and American consumers found it irresistible for its convenience, selection, and low prices.
