The town of Terezin, or Theresienstadt to use it’s German name
was founded in 1780, it lies 30 miles north of Prague. Terezin was never defended or invested and remained for years a moss covered monument to Austria.
In October 1941 at Prague castle, it was decided to move the Jews of the Protehorat into Terezin.
“Transport to the ghetto of Terezin would not require muchtime…two or three trains containing a thousand Jews could be sent every day. ... Fifty or sixty thousand Jews will be comfortably accommodated in Terezin. ... ”
As early as October 1941 then, Terezin’s role had been determined,
