Before the conclusion of the Cold War the United Nations (UN) really didn’t have many international situations involving conflict to deal with. ... Hensel in their article “United Nations Intervention and Recurring Conflict. ... The theory derived from the empirical evidence gained is indeed very possible showing involvement between the UN and certain states has very little effect on recurring conflict.
Since the UN has very little affiliation on the states should the UN become involved in the conflict. ... And if such conflict did reoccur, does UN involvement at least lessen the cruelty of the future problem? ... The authors expected that if there were greater differences between the capabilities of two nations, then the chance of conflict to persist would also increase as well. ... The UN’s involvement in the “War on Terror”, and the disarmament of nuclear capabilities of countries that are not negotiating with UN policies, could be a reason to raise the argument to interfere in the situation. ... Involvement types were rated one to four according to the International Crisis Behavior Project; one being passive diplomatic, two representing active diplomatic, three stood for operational deployment of military forces, and four was defined as the obliging “other”. ... ” (Singer, Bremer, and Stuckey 1972 as cited by Diehl, Reifschnieder, and Hensel 1996)
Forming an initial equation for their hypothesis the authors stated “Recurring Conflict = UN Intervention + Involvement Type + Violence Level + Crisis Outcome + Recent Disputes + Relative Capabilities.” (Diehl, Reifschneider, Hensel 1996) While UN intervention was the explanatory variable in the first hypothesis stating involvement had no effect on the recurrence of violence in the long run, this formula added in more factors, controlling variables. ...
