The struggle of choosing a mate that children have with their parents is very common and strenuous, as seen in Chinua Achebe’s “Marriage Is a Private Affair.” The story has three influential characters, Nnaemeka, Nene, his wife, and Okeke, his father. Nnaemeka is an obedient and loyal son that is caught between his father and his wife. He loves Nene, his wife, greatly. He loves his father, Okeke, and his family also. His father has made his disapproval of Nnameka’s mate well known. Nnameka attempts to plea with his father and break through his father’s stubbornness. Nnameka knew that his father would disapprove of his mate and their marriage; yet, he had some hope that his father would come around and be more open. Nnameka did not want to change his father, just broaden his views of tribal culture and introduce new culture to him since Nnameka had evolved to learn and live the ways in a metropolis area. He did not necessarily forget his tribal ways. He became open to the ways of city life, where tribal traditions did not rule everything.
