WEST SIDE

Introduction Sitting at a bar, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison are reading the newspaper. They become very annoyed after an article regarding the influence of special interest groups on the federal government (i.e. donations, lobbying). This evolves into a discussion about the current state of the American political process. MADISON: Thomas, we have a problem with the current political process. Money and factions are harming our government. JEFFERSON: What exactly do you mean, Thomas? MADISON: Large political donations from very wealthy individuals and special interest groups, “the factions,” are having a bad influence on the way we govern our country. They want to take over. JEFFERSON: It’s a problem, but not entirely because of factions. People have the right those types of groups, if they so choose. But the real problem is the lack of understanding by fellow citizens.
