A Cheerful Child or A Dull Child?

Some parents too concern about their children’s future, and they sometimes provide the Spartan education for children. Those parents believe entering a “good” school is the best way to have a “good” job in the future, and they tend to make their upbringings strictly and highly structured. I worked at a prep school, or “a cramming school”, where students go to study to catch up with classes or to pass entrance exams after regular school, for about two years in Japan. And I saw many children who were forced to study every day, even during summer vacation. On the other hand, I’ve baby-sat several times, and I’ve seen many children who had been freely brought up. In childhood, I think children can learn how to have a healthy life, social skills and how to develop their interests. From my experiences, I believe that highly structured upbringings sometimes bring undesirable consequences for children. The biggest difference between highly structured-brought up children and freely brought up children is whether they look healthy. Strictly raised children sometimes look unhealthy. Seeing those children at my work, the reason is obvious – they stay in an air-conditioned room for all day, only studying every day.
