Sexual Education Program Paper
“Choices and Changes”
A recent sexual education program was assessed over a four year period during the years of 1998 through 2001, called “Choices and Changes.” The program was conducted on elementary school students in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. All of the students were from Elijah Smith School where the program was assessed. ... Data was collected from the students before, directly after the program and also in a 3-4 month follow-up on a variety of topics, which will be discussed later. The parents/guardian gave input on the program objectives as well.
When this program was assessed, the majority of the information that had been collected on sexual education programs had been on high school students. Presenting sexual education to elementary students is a controversial issue. What information that has been presented to the elementary level has not had much to do with sexual education and was focused directly on HIV/AIDS, and not on appropriate overall sexual health education information. The great importance of the conclusions of the program enables educators and program planners to show whether or not the program is effective, relevant and appropriate to the audience, which is targeted.
The Yukon elementary schools followed the British Columbia Ministry of Education’s Personal Planning K to 7 program includes components on critical thinking, sexual health, health acquisition, and decision making on sexual health and relationships. ...
The program was designed by combining ideas and activities from several other existing programs and also new activities and ideas to make the program different and unique.
