Associate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has his own definition of racism. Thomas views racism as an internal struggle that the oppressed use an excuse for the negativity that surrounds their lives. Thomas believes that everyone has an equal opportunity to pull themselves up by the boot straps and succeed in whatever venture they put their minds. In his thoughts, Thomas rationalizes that racism allows and encourages the “least fortunate…to turn to legal arguments that defeat and that challenge the moral authority of society.”(Thomas 82) Thomas’ idea of victimization truly captures the underlying feelings that he has about racism. Unlike Tatum, Thomas believes that people buy in to the notion that they are victims of circumstance and they cannot leave the depths of victim hood without help from outside sources, i. ... ”(Thomas 84)
The only piece of Thomas’ puzzle that fits with Tatum’s idea of racism is that there is racism. ... ) Where as, Thomas’ portrait is all one picture. ... Thomas kindly portrays the oppressed individual as the true dismissal of the human race.
Tatum and Thomas disagree on the remedy for discrimination. Thomas believes that the only way to overcome discrimination is to do it with one’s own will and effort. ... ”(Thomas 79) On the other hand, Tatum believes that the oppressors must combat racism or discrimination.
