Jesuss Teachings on Divorce

Jesus’s Teachings on Divorce

Many aspects of Christianity are debated upon still today. One of the most famous and oldest is the disagreement on divorce. Is divorce allowable in God’s eyes or is it an abomination no matter what circumstances? Debates upon divorce have been on going since Biblical times and are still thriving today in many churches. I intend to present the historical Biblical teachings of divorce and compare them to Jesus’s teachings on the topic, and prove my opinion that divorce is an abomination and thus limits the Christian’s religious roles.
In the Old Testament divorce is touched upon a few times and establishes some definitive guidelines. ... Thus divorce was not an issue in this instance since God only intended Adam to have one mate. ... God also states in the Old Testament texts that divorce was allowable by Moses but has certain stipulations.
God instructed Moses to inform the people of the laws concerning divorce. Although God is strictly against divorce he tolerated it in this instance because the hearts of the men had become hardened, and God did not want the men to abuse their wives, rule over them harshly, or murder them. The laws concerning divorce were as follows: a man could not divorce his wife unless he found some uncleanness in her, it must not be done by word of mouth but by writing only, the husband must make provisions for her so that she may marry again, being divorced it was lawful for her to marry another husband only after the previous husband was naturally dead, and finally that if her second husband died, or divorced her, then still she might marry a third, but can never remarry her first. ... God tolerated divorce only on the terms listed above.
The only two instances where divorce was strictly forbidden is if the man falsely accuses the woman of not being a virgin at the time of the marriage, and if the woman was raped.
