Video games are my life. Well.. they are not everything to me; however, they do play a major part in my free time. When I was no more than three feet tall, my dad and I would go down to “The Neighbors”, a local bar/restaurant, that happened to house heaven in a box—a little half-sized arcade console for Super Mario Brothers. We would spend quite literally hours in front of the 12” screen, hoping to make it past just one more level before we left. Usually, we never got past the second stage of Level 6. Not too long after that, my dad performed a miracle akin to turning blood into wine: he came home one day with a Nintendo Entertainment System in his hand. No more afternoon trips to “The Neighbors” for us! From there, everything just fell into place. We mastered Super Mario Brothers in half a year. Well, at least my father mastered it. I was still struggling with the fifth dungeon in SMB—the one with a giant fire wheel spinning quite quickly across a pit of lava. I can still remember lying awake, stretched out on the floor, feeling the light summer breeze through the open doors, just watching him. Sometimes I would watch the screen, see Mario just make it to the castle before time ran out. Other times I would watch my dad—I could see the television screen mirrored in his glasses, his eyes glued to the TV set. My eyes were glued on his. And when he made it to the end, braving the eight dungeon filled with monsters, a veritable maze of danger, I avidly watched as he darted beneath Bowser’s feet as the fire-breathing evil turtle king was in mid-leap.
