An hour in a wheelchair was not supposed to be an attempt to show me what it felt like to be disabled. An hour couldn’t do that. An hour showed me how wonderfully convenient it is to be able-bodied in the way that only a lifetime’s use of my four major limbs could have taught me to appreciate. Almost everyone in the store thought I was disabled. In many ways, I was. I wasn’t ‘able’ to reach the aisle’s top shelf to see if the Ken’s Raspberry Vinaigrette was the Walnut Lite flavor that I love, or the new Raspberry Pecan flavor that was just introduced. I wasn’t ‘able’ to make clucking sounds with my heals or quickly dodge anyone who was on the verge of backing into the invisible wheelchair-bound person quietly rolling rubber-soled wheels behind them.
