William Bryant was one of the most important poets during the Romanticism era. He was able to take English style Romanticism into a new American style of romanticism. He gave romantic poets a new voice that is clearly stated in “Thanatopsis”. This poem illustrates many romantic qualities. It looks against the artificial aspects of civilization and looks for unspoiled nature. It contemplates nature’s beauty as a way to moral and spiritual development. In “Thanatopsis” Bryant is looking to nature for a lesson about life and death. He tells the reader “When thoughts of the last bitter hour come like a blight…Go forth, under the open sky, and list to nature’s teachings”.
