Questions for Discussion d. Why does Hong Kingston refer to her aunt as “prodigal” (paragraph 15)? What meanings does she associate with this term? Hong Kingston refers to her aunt as prodigal, meaning her aunt is very generous when it comes to waste. For instance, adultery was a big waste. Kingston refers to her aunt as a lone romantic who gave up everything for sex. Her aunt even gives herself up for sex. Any random man would command her to do anything he wanted. She obeyed these men, although sometime they terrified her. Her aunt not only performed sexual acts for these men, but anything she was told to. Moreover, Kingston’s aunt’s attempt to kill herself and the baby in the well was very wasteful. Her aunt felt as if she was predestined for unhappiness.
