The Last Days The Last Days is a documentary about the Holocaust that focuses on the particular experiences of Hungarian Jews and emphasizes the hatred that fueled the “Final Solution”. The five Hungarians provide eyewitness to Hitler’s escalated efforts to eliminate the largest remaining Jewish population in Europe, forcing the incarceration and near total incineration of nearly 500,000 people over a three month span. Hungary was originally a haven for the Jews fleeing Poland after Hitler’s invasion, bring with them talk of brutality, mass shootings, and of infants being torn in half. Collectively the five survivors state the Hungarians had a belief that their own countrymen would not do such a thing or allow it to happen. The survivors tell their stories in a clear, pragmatic manner. Among others featured during this documentary are Tom Lantos and Bill Basch. Although, Tom Lantos and Bill Basch are similar in that they were both Jewish men and members of the underground; they differed in background, imprisonment experiences, post war accomplishments, and thoughts. Neither Tom Lantos nor Bill Basch has extraordinary backgrounds. Tom Lantos was from Budapest, a world class city were the Jews were fully assimilated into the population. Budapest was a modern a city, equal to Paris, Rome, or perhaps even Washington D.C. The Budapest Jews thought of themselves as Hungarians whose religion happened to be Jewish. Conversely, Bill Basch came from a traditional Jewish home in a small farming village in the Carpathian Mountains. The population of Bill’s hometown was less than three thousand. This small community had no electricity or running water, a far cry from the ultra modern Budapest.
