... Tracking is a school process of labeling and sorting students based on academic performance, often using standardized test scores to determine who is high performing and who is not. Is it beneficial to those students that need the extra help or do lower-performing groups actually fall further behind than they might have if they had stayed in a class with their better-performing classmates? ... I am neither for nor against separating students according to their ability level. ...
One reason for ability tracking is that students who are gifted and more advanced are able to work free and at a faster pace than the lower-achieving students who may require working at a slower pace. Students learn at a comfortable pace, neither held back by students who are working at a slower pace nor pushed ahead by the more advanced students. Another reason why tracking works is that it is probably easier for the teacher to teach students who are all on the same level.
