Jewish Joke: Hitler goes to a fortunes teller and asks, “When will I die?” and the fortuneteller says, “On a Jewish holiday”. Hitler asks, “How do you know?” and the fortuneteller says, “Any day you die is a Jewish holiday.” “Don’t fill our hearts with false hopes.” During the Holocaust one of the primary notions lost by the Jews in the ghettos was the mere concept of hope. Numerous Jews were discriminated harshly, yet while in the ghettos, most of the “inferiors” lost faith and hope in merely everything. However, the purpose which Jakob the Liar hoped to accomplish, as his lies increased and deepened, was to increase the hopes of the Jews, even if the hopes were lies. Yet, by doing so, the suicide rate decreased, but the hopes increased to levels where the Jews were ready to be freed. Hopes should not be risen by lies, even if one will be happier, because hope should be true to maintain a great amount of happiness. “My crowning achievement: latkes and lies.” Beginning the movie in Poland during the winter of 1944, “Jakob the Liar” is mainly revolved around a Jewish man in a camp, Jakob Heym, who lies to keep up the hopes of remaining camp.
