George W. Bush’s State of the Union Address reflects the “City on the Hill” myth. The first reason is that the first line “Americans are a resolute people who have risen to every test of our time” of Bush’s text relates to a quote in one of the first paragraph in Baritz text which said, “And we Americans are the peculiar, chosen people–the Israel of our time; we bear the ark of liberties of the world.” With different sources I will try and make you realize why are why fighting for, or better yet for what are we fighting for. Also is God really on our side? I think that God is neutral in these conflicts. Bush’s invocation fits with Baritz discussion of America’s belief that we have been “chosen to lead the world in public morality, and to instruct it in political virtue” by none other than God himself. Baritz talks about how puritans tried spreading their belief to a continent that they themselves did not understand fully. George W. Bush is doing the same because he went into Iraq to try and impose everyone there to have their “freedom.” In other words he goes to places where nobody wants to see him, maybe they liked to have Saddam as their ruler in stead of some president that barely understands their culture.
