Killer Angels by Shaara Analysis

The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara is a very historically accurate depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. ... Shaara specifically covers the Battle of Gettysburg which takes place from July 1, 1863, to July 3, 1863. Shaara ultimately chose the Battle of Gettysburg as his main subject in the book instead of the many other battles of the Civil War because the southern Confederates were at its height in power as was the Union. ... Shaara focuses more on the battle of Little Round Top located on the very end of the Union line. Shaara focuses more on the battle at the end of the line because it was critical if the Confederates outflanked the union army, then the Confederates would’ve massacred the Union from the back on the higher part of Cemetery Ridge, therefor winning the war and changing the outcome of history. The first day, Shaara sets up the organization and formation of the armies, what caused the battle develop, the mutineers’ risk, and the outline of the positions of the armies during June 30, 1863. ... Shaara stresses maps and topography in his novel. ... Shaara incorporates the maps from historically accurate explanations from Civil War veterans. The Killer Angels takes the reader into the minds of the people whose story is being told, theirs views, thoughts, and actions are brought to the reader to feel as if he was there during the battle. Shaara’s depiction of the war gives an original effect to the reader on the story of the Battle of Gettysburg. ...
Michael Shaara, the author of The Killer Angels, was born in 1928 in New Jersey and grew up in New Jersey city. Shaara attended and graduated from Rutgers University for college. Shaara was a paratrooper, amateur boxer, police officer and then became a professor of creative writing. With the experience of being in the military, being a professor of creative writing, and being thoroughly accurate with the letters and documents of the soldiers at the battle, Shaara gives some competence in writing this book. With the experience of the military, Shaara would know what it was like to be in a military setting, what it was like to march for long distances and may have seen action. ... This is Shaara’s first book written on the subject of the civil war, his previous works deal mostly with science fiction. In the point of view in the book, Michael Shaara did not show any strong bias to either side.
