The sculptor Meta Fuller born in 1877 received a prestigious education in Paris and very was very fortunate to work with some highly recognized sculptors of the time. Creator of The Awakening of Ethiopia and The Talking Skull, Fuller directly addresses African American themes boldly for an artist of her time, race, and gender. ...
Mary Edmonia Lewis, similarly to Fuller was also a sculptor who overcame momentous amounts of prejudice. A student of Oberlin College, the first interracial and coeducational institution in the United States Lewis was destine to face several adversities.
