Sometimes life can be cruel, so cruel that you might have to lose what is most precious, to realize what is right. In The Pearl, a man named Kino is triumphant over “the pearl of temptation.” Many tragic events that took place have taught Kino an important lesson in life and he gained wisdom beyond words. This took place consequently from the finding of the pearl and mostly through the pain he experienced. Through Coyotito’s death, although tragic, Kino gained a sense of courage and strength, which freed him from the pearls’ evil binding. In the beginning, Kino had hoped Coyotito's would “break out of the pot that holds us in.” He hoped to win freedom and knowledge through his son and ironically he did, unfortunately through his death. Kino gained the courage to break through the evil of the pearl which was said to be “apart of him now.” Steinbeck shows how sometimes greed and death, although tragic, can help someone grow stronger in spirit and in will to triumph over evil.
