The war that ended with tens of millions of men and boys being shipped home in boxes, World War II was the largest butchery ever to take place in the world?s history. Adolf Hitler, the nefarious leader of the horrendous Nazi party, was responsible for the majority of the fatalities. This seemingly purely evil man was at one point a pleasant innocent child. He was corrupted by outside influences that molded him into the pure unadulterated evil that he became. Born into a classic dysfunctional family, Hitler suffered great trauma at the expense of his immediate family. His father, Alois Hitler, was the main cause of this trauma. He had a short-tempered and brutal outlook upon the world, resulting from an absent father, a bitter mother, and a failed first marriage (Library Think Quest 1). He attempted to drown his sorrows with alcohol by frequently visiting the tavern. With the combination of depression and alcoholism, He was hardly an ideal role model. Alois had one other child but he ended up in jail for ?Diebstahl hat ergriffen [grand theft]? (Library Think Quest 1). Determined that the young Hitler was not going to go down the same path, Alois put tremendous pressure on him to excel at everything he did. This brutal approach at raising the young Adolf often led to Alois to hit and harass him (Abe Lard 2). On the other hand, Hitler?s mother, Klara Pölzl, was the sharp contrast of his father. She was loving and caring and would often take the side of Hitler when he and his father would be at ends. Klara also suffered from the same physical abuse that young Hitler did (Father Ryan 1), which brought these two even closer together. She was Hitler?s only true friend and doted on him for the rest of her life. As a result he carried a photo of Klara in his wallet wherever he went (History Learning Site 11) (Library Think Quest 2). While Adolf?s cuts and bruises would heal in time, he would never fully recover from psychological damage. An increasing emotional tension continued to plague Hitler, causing him an unnatural amount of stress and anxiety. His dreams of becoming an artist did not come off well with his father, who forced him to attended engineering school (Library Think Quest 5), in the ?bustling city? of Linz (History Learning Site 3). The transition between elementary school and high school was exceptionally tough on the eleven year old Adolf Hitler. His brother had died and he also had to adapt to a new environment (Father Ryan 3).
