Report on court visit Introduction The case on my visit to the Guildford Crown Court was the case of Dhani Ram, a retired teacher from India and a grandfather of two grandsons. After going through the judicial procedures of swearing in the jury, and after the defendant has stated he had no objections as to the jury, the indictment was read by the prosecuting barrister. The defendant was charged on indictment on four counts. All 4 counts were on indecency with a child with the particulars of gross indecency with an under 14 year old, contrary to the Indecency with Children Act 1916. The four counts differed only in location and time of the offence. When it was clear what the theme of the case was, the judge pointed out the importance of not letting any emotions show during the case, because the judge admitted that this was a controversial topic. The jury was also was informed on the importance of not letting any information slip out, or discussion of the facts with anyone outside this court, to insure that the result was purely the opinion of the jury and not of other people who had talked to them.
