The title of this film pretty much sums up the purpose behind its creation. It is a documentary that tells the story of the experiences of the post Civil War and reconstruction period immigrants had on their journey to America. It explains the many hardships that were faced when families tried to leave their countries, how horrible the conditions were on the ships they took, all of the troubles they had to go through in order to be accepted into America, and the further hardships they faced in America. Aspects that give this film an impact are its narration, the use of pictures and back round noises to exhibit the feeling of how it was for these immigrants. This film gives off the feeling of gloominess at the beginning, then exuberance and triumph at the end, all in juxtaposition with its narration and the still pictures it uses. I would say that the overall massage of the documentary is quite clear. The experiences of the immigrants that came to America were extremely harsh and their hardships were many, but as they continued to work hard they were able to overcome them.
