Economic Environmental issues of Sydney Olympics the British Grand Prix

Sydney Report

Evaluate the environmental and socio economic impacts of two contrasting large sporting events on their local area

Abstract
This paper is an in depth report into the various impacts that the Sydney Olympics 2000 and the British Grand Prix have on their local environment and economy, after outlining the general factors it then goes into more detailed economic and environmental issues. ...

Introduction
Large sporting events such as the Olympics can have massive effects on the local environment and the local economy whether they be good or bad. ... In other cases it can be the other way round, because so much care has gone into preserving the environment the whole event isn’t economically sustainable, in this report I shall be evaluating how well Sydney 2000 Olympics and the British Grand Prix (Silverstone) are balancing the two of these. To be able to evaluate the environmental and economic issues of money spent on the events, money spent at the events, money made by the events, sustainability of venues, environmental issues from building and using the venues. ...

Sydney, environmental Issues: Most people think that hosting a large sporting event is going to be bad for the environment, due to all the extra traffic and new buildings being built. Sydney is no different, it spent $3b on improvements to public transport and has built 65% of all the games venues newly for the games, people thought this was quite strange considering that the committees overall goal was “Environmental Sustainability”, which judging by the definition is to “cause no long or short environmental damage”. ... The airport was also improved with an extra runway added and another two terminals, this has all added to a much-improved infrastructure which in the long run will cut down on the overall car usage in Sydney.
I think the overall aim of “environmental protection was very well met, all the new venues were built on Brownfield sites to prevent damage to any ecosystems. ...
Another area that was redeveloped was Homebush bay (see pic 1), it’s now a very popular ferry port that ferries thousands of tourists across Sydney harbour everyday, however back in 1993Greenpeace excavated 69barrels of Dioxin, Dioxin is a cancer causing bi-product of PVC.
