aine, Michael (1933- ), British actor, who made his name playing an offbeat espionage agent with a distinctive Cockney accent in a series of motion pictures in the 1960s. Caine later broadened his range and became known for his versatility. Born in a working-class section of London, England, as Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, Jr., Caine left school at age 15. He worked odd jobs and began pursuing his acting career in amateur theater in the late 1940s. Caine then served in the British army in Korea and Germany, returning to London in the early 1950s. Soon afterward he changed his name to Michael Caine, supposedly after seeing a signboard displaying the title of the film The Caine Mutiny (1954).
