A Daughter in Distress

Most poems talk about love, pain, friendship, and sacrifices as central topics, but seldom are we going to encounter one that has a dark regard for a father. When one looks into Sylvia Plath’s “Daddy”, you will see that her view of her father deviates from our traditions and beliefs. In her perspective, her father was a God, a Nazi, a devil, and a vampire all at the same time. When I first read the poem, I was stunned by the way she addressed her dad. But, at the same time, it evoked in me a feeling of pity. She wouldn’t feel that way against her father if her experiences didn’t dictate so. Every stanza, every line, and every comparison in her poem has been set off with emotions ablaze to trace back the path of her life. The most distinct experiences of the author that are revealed in the poem are her view of her father, her suicide attempt, and her marriage.
