     In Japanese society the family is of great importance, it is viewed as the primary source for acquiring skills to maintain healthy relationships in a social environment. The family is where children first learn what it means to be an ideal Japanese individual, having courage, nobility, and acting harmonious and peaceful. ... The mother tries to stop them from any quarreling, as this is looked down upon in Japanese Society. As it states in Understanding Japanese Society, by Joy Hendry, “Children playing together avoid situations of dispute. ... Mama tries to follow this Japanese custom of Harmony, and trains her children to avoid conflict. ... The mother tries to mold her children to be ideal people, who are accepted in Japanese society, by teaching them to be harmonious and noble. ... The family in this story chooses a more traditional Japanese way of handling disobedient children, by acting peacefully through self restraint, instead of punishing the children. ... This is also very typical of Japanese society to have the grandparents help with the children as Hendry states, “The role of grandparents is still strong with regard to child care”#. ... Even though the family is not happy with this decision they accept that it is what Noriko wants, and are happy that she is happy with her decision. ... The family is regarded as extremely important in Japanese society and is where most social skills are learned. ...
