Wittenberg: Wittenberg was best known for the “creation” of the reformation movement. It was the birthplace of Martin Luther, a catholic theologian that saw the Catholic church of the 1500’s as being corrupt. Reformation: The reformation movement of the 1500’s was a very important time period in the development of religions in the west. The 1500’s was characterized by a very dominant and corrupt catholic church. The movement was started by Martin Luther but later on continued by Ulrich Zwingli, John Calvin, and Menno Simons. This was a movement that complained about the Catholic Church and the way they dealt with Christianity at the moment. In the beginning, the people rejected the payment of indulgences in order for the church to raise money. Later on it created independent churches and different thoughts started to emerge. The followers of this Protestantism did not believe in the authority of the Pope anymore, and they also rejected the adoration of virgins and saints. They believed it was a sense of idolatry.
