Motifs are incidents, characters, or concepts or patterns which reoccur in a work of literature. “Young Goodman Brown” is the story of a young man who leaves his new wife, Faith, and goes on a dangerous and evil adventure in the forest where he encounters the Devil and gets a different perspective on life. Hawthorne uses Faith’s pink ribbons to portray a childlike innocence about her, which are both lost later on. This not only symbolizes Faith losing her innocence, but it also shows Hawthorne’s theme that humans are naturally sinful and even the most pure humans sin.
